Six-Year Maintenance

Every 6 years, stored-pressure fire extinguishers that require a 12-year hydrostatic test shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable maintenance procedures. When the applicable maintenance procedures are performed during a periodic recharging or hydrostatic testing, the 6-year requirement shall begin from that date.

Note: Nonrechargeable fire extinguishers shall not be hydrostatic tested but shall be removed from service at a maximum interval of 12 years from the date of manufacture.
When your extinguisher(s) requires 6-year maintenance, we perform this service at our shop facilities.

When a cylinder does not pass a 6-year maintenance, it is marked “Condemned”

We do not repair any condemned cylinders. If the owner requests us to dispose of the cylinder, we drill a hole in the cylinder and make it non-useable before we dispose of it.

We do not charge for cylinder disposal!

Extinguishers that pass the applicable 6-year maintenance will have maintenance information recorded on a metallic label that is applied to the rear of the extinguisher. The metallic labels we use will self destruct if removal is attempted and the words “Void” will be visible and remain on the shell. The label has the following information:
  • The 6-year indicator is punched.
  • Month and year the maintenance is performed is punched.
  • Company information that is performing the maintenance is imprinted on the label.
  • Initials of the person performing the maintenance.
We remove all old (unapproved) labels from the extinguisher.

Verification of Service

Each extinguisher that we recharge or receives maintenance that includes internal examination will have a “Verification of Service” collar placed around the neck of the container.

The collars we use are color coded based on the size of the cylinder neck.

The collar is a single circular piece of uninterrupted material forming a hole of a size that will not permit the collar assembly to move over the neck of the container unless the valve is completely removed.

The collar indicates the month and year the service was performed, indicated by a perforation done by a hand punch.

Cartridge and cylinder-operated extinguishers are not required to have a “Verification of Service” collar installed.
